Devendra Banhart announces Bluesfest 2014 Sideshows
By Alana Mazurke
Early 2013 saw the release of American singer/songwriter Devendra Banhart’s new album Mala. The LP features fourteen tracks co-produced with fellow band mate and guitarist Noah Goergeson and is the eighth release from the commended artist. Coming off the back of the highly acclaimed 2009 What Will We Be with Rolling Stone Magazine calling it “the best he’s ever made”, Mala has deemed itself worthy of equivalent praise.
Using the common almost systematic use of hand me down four-track machines and vintage instruments, Banhart creates a similar vibe from his first release in 2002 Oh Me Oh My … The Way the Day Goes By the Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs of the Christmas Spirit yet with maturation of his voice and comfortableness in his music the new release is certainly a highlight of 2013.
Q Magazine featured Mala as one of their top 50 albums of last year claiming, “This is a beautiful album that counterpoints Banhart’s boundless and surreal imagination against a newly-discovered depth and sincerity.” Pitchfork says “Mala is Banhart’s best record in nearly a decade,” concluding that “Banhart sounds refreshed and relieved here … finally taking the opportunity to show that he doesn’t take himself as seriously as a lot of people take him.” With the release of the album comes the tour and fortunately for Australians Devendra Banhart has been added to Byron Bay Bluesfest 2014 announcing two headline sideshows for Sydney and Melbourne.
